2 Years On - Status Update

As we acknowledge the passing of two years since the loss of our Hugh and establishment of this fund, we wanted to keep everyone updated on latest events.

We have successfully established both a short-term and a long-term fund for the scholarships at Morehouse College. The short-term fund, the Hugh T. Douglas ‘25 Current Use Fund, provides initial funding for the first year or so while the long-term endowment is established, and the long-term fund, the Hugh T. Douglas ‘25 Endowed Scholarship Fund, will fund the scholarship in perpetuity. We are giving away one $7,500 scholarship each year to rising Juniors who are Business majors with a concentration in Finance. The scholarship will renew, providing a total of $15,000 in funding per recipient. Morehouse faculty and staff choose from among the candidate students. We intend to engage all recipients and maintain a connection among this special fraternity of Morehouse Men that will form as a result.

In April, we attended the E. B. Williams Awards Banquet at Morehouse, where Chace Cleveland ‘27, a rising junior from Conyers, GA, received the first scholarship award from our fund. We look forward to engaging more with Chace as the first of many students who will benefit from Hugh’s light and legacy, and from your generosity.

On May 18, 2025, we attended Morehouse’s Commencement ceremony. Hugh was honored during the ceremony. It was a bittersweet day, but we are grateful to Morehouse for the acknowledgement and for the administration of the scholarship.

Independently of our efforts, Hugh’s cousin and classmate Jace La Saint ‘25 launched the Hugh Thomas Douglas Leadership Academy in February 2025. He assembled a group of mentors and leaders in various fields (including the author of this post) to speak to over 20 freshmen students about leadership, honesty, integrity, and embodying the values Hugh demonstrated in his daily life. The multi-week curriculum helped make students better leaders, and helps preserve the legacy of Hugh through the stories we shared and the connection of those stories to important values. We look forward to seeing how the graduates of the program will continue to carry on this legacy.

The outpouring of support you have given us and continue to give makes all of this possible. You may give via the Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley to our donor-advised fund as you have been, or you may give directly to the Hugh T. Douglas '25 Endowed Scholarship Fund at Morehouse College through their donations page. We hope to be able to give more high-impact scholarships to academically excellent students in the future.

We thank you for your support of our family through this lifelong journey. We are deeply grateful for all you have done to make sure that Hugh’s legacy and positive impact on the world will carry on through generations of scholarship recipients.
